Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.

He stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate following their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

The newly public emails showed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted Summers' decision to depart.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.

The bill will then move to the desk of the White House for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after changing his position on the matter following objections from his base.

A batch of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee days ago referenced several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.

The communications indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to link Summers to influential international personalities.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to continue interacting with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and fix bonds with the people nearest to me".

Career Background

Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
